What is EEG?
An Electroencephalogram (EEG) is a safe, non-invasive diagnostic test that records the electrical activity of the brain. It captures the tiny voltage fluctuations in the brain’s neurons via electrodes placed on the scalp, translating those signals into visual wave-forms for specialist analysis.
EEG is an essential tool for understanding how your brain is functioning. It helps detect abnormalities such as irregular brain rhythms, seizure activity, sleep disorders, and other neurological irregularities.
When is an EEG Needed?
Doctors may recommend an EEG in situations such as:
- Diagnosing and monitoring epilepsy and seizure disorders
- Investigating sleep disturbances including insomnia, narcolepsy or sleep-apnea related brain effects
- Evaluating unexplained fainting episodes, blackouts, or confusion
- Assessing brain activity after head injuries, stroke or in coma care
- Monitoring brain function during or after surgery, in ICU or critical-care settings
Depending on the clinical case, the EEG can be done as a routine 30-60 minute test, a sleep-deprived study, or a long-term monitoring session.
Who Requires EEG?
An EEG may be appropriate for:
- Children showing developmental delays, unexplained seizures, or learning difficulties
- Adults experiencing sudden behavioural changes, memory issues or suspected neurological conditions
- Patients under observation for epilepsy, dementia, head trauma or other brain-related disorders
- Critical care/ICU patients to continuously monitor brain electrical activity and assist in clinical decision-making
How is EEG Performed?
The EEG procedure is simple, safe and patient-friendly:
- You will be comfortably seated or lying down. Electrodes (small metal discs) will be applied to specific locations on the scalp via a conductive gel.
- During the recording period (typically 30-60 minutes), you may be asked to relax, keep your eyes open and closed, breathe deeply, or look at flashing lights—depending on the study.
- If a sleep or long-term EEG is required, electrodes remain in place for extended monitoring (hours or overnight) in a controlled environment.
- After the test, electrodes are gently removed. A specialist neurologist interprets the data and a report is provided.
The test is painless, does not involve radiation or injections, and allows you to resume normal activities shortly after.
